Try something new or do something you haven’t in a while. You will be surprised how something small can energize you!
What I love about Advent and Christmas time is that we can experience the same traditions and music. It’s like putting on our favorite pair of fuzzy slippers, so comfy, welcome, and predictable. We tend to do the things we always do, and don’t deviate much. Stepping out of our comfort zone, or bringing back a tradition can bring you a different sort of joy.
We tend to cling to our traditions, we bake the same cookies, make the same meals, and go to the same places. Is it so comfy that you forget to marvel and wonder at what is out there?
In the past month, I have been to two concerts- the first one right before Thanksgiving, and the second one just this past weekend. The first band I had heard of, but forgot how much I liked them. Discovering them all over again and listening to more recent music of theirs has brought me joy. Last Friday, I discovered a whole new group, a different style of music all together. The concert was wonderful and I marveled at the beauty of the music and voices.
I’m not asking you to change everything or anything if you don’t want to, but I am asking you to (re)discover something in this season of wonder. Introduce a new dish at a family meal (or bring back a family favorite). Add a new activity or game to the day, make Christmas ornaments for the tree, or go caroling. By changing something that seems small, you may discover that it brings a very wonderful holiday.
