Psalm 23 speaks to me, what does it say to you?
There are only six verses in Psalm 23, and every one is overflowing with messages for us. Here are three of the verses and what they mean to me, maybe you will share too and we will both be richer for it.
Let’s start at the beginning. The Lord is my Shepard, I shall not want. Life choices and circumstances influence our power to buy things, plus a global pandemic changed the way many people shop forever. It reminds me that I already have everything that I need, and God always provides. It’s the same when I pack my suitcase for a trip. I pack what I think I need, and then I take three items out. (sometimes more) I always come home not using all the things in the suitcase.
Then, there is verse five when I feel like vengeance. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. When the haters are hating, gossiping, or spreading lies, no worries. God’s got my back. I avoided people and a part of town for awhile because of what I thought “might happen” because of such people. When nothing came of the threats, I realized that the people who know me, know the truth about me, and it doesn’t matter what the others said.
Verse six says Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life. Some translations say mercy instead of love, but this verse gives me comfort. It tells me that God’s goodness and love/mercy are literally chasing me down. All I have to is accept it. Easier said than done, certainly, but I can’t be too far of the track if I have God’s goodness, grace, and love.
You may never have pondered Psalm 23. I encourage you to read it today and see what message jumps out for you.
