I love rainbows. If it’s sunny and raining all at the same time (happens where I live) I will run outside and look. Rainbows are magical sights. It’s a literal connection between heaven and the Earth. Rainbows, connection, are you also thinking of an adorable frog?
I’m sure like many of my generation, the Muppets were the soundtrack of my childhood. I had the record. I’m sure I sang along obnoxiously. (no one heard me singing along today, lol) I loved all the Muppets, Ms. Piggy was my favorite, but I had to love Kermit equally. He’s relatable. He’s kind, a bit shy and awkward, curious, and asks lots of questions.
Kermit sings to us in a wistful yet hopeful voice and asks a bunch of questions. He doesn’t offer any solutions or advice, just that “Someday we’ll find it…The lovers, the dreamers, and me” What is the “it”? Where is the connections?
The first connection is between God and us. A rainbow stretches from the heavens to Earth, just like God is constantly trying to connect with us. A rainbow is a reminder of His presence in our lives. It can also be an invitation to enter (or return) to the unique relationship that each have with God.
The second connection is between myself and others. A rainbow has many colors. The world is made up of all kinds of people, different personalities, thoughts, races, yet we are all connected somehow. I am tasked with connecting to others who are different than me, building a bridge if you will between us to better understanding.
Just like Kermit, I’m a wistful dreamer. I’m looking for connection with God and others. I think that’s what he’s singing about, our connection to everyone and everything. What kind of connection are you seeking today? Is it with God? Look up. Is it with others? Look around, you might just see a beautiful rainbow.
