What’s your work?

Have you ever woken up and just felt that you need to do something? This morning I woke up and thought I should go to mass. It’s been awhile since I have been to daily mass. I used to go on my way to work, then I stopped working in a school, and no longer passed a church, so today I went.

Today is May 1st, and in many parts of the world it’s Labor day. It’s also the feast of St. Joseph the worker. Did you know that he has two feast days? One as Mary’s husband and Jesus’ adopted father and one honoring his work as a carpenter. (Labor day, carpenter….I just put that together)

The passage below and the homily resonated with me. Joseph was a carpenter, he saw beauty in the wood and created something useful with love. He also passed those skills on to Jesus. We have work that supports us (like carpentry) and our spiritual work.

The deacon made a point to say that yes, the work that supports us is important. But, I also need to pay attention to the spiritual work, the work that I am being called to do.

What is my spiritual work? Do you know what yours is? If my spiritual light is supposed to be shining through my work, is it? Lots of questions, not so many answers, just some ponderings. For a long time, the two were intertwined in a classroom with hundreds of kids each year, now it’s different.

My challenge today is to ask God to show me the spiritual work He wants me to do and to lead me in that direction. What about you? How do you (or did you) find the answer to that question?
