What kind of mom are you?

You may have kids or not, but I bet you are a mom to someone, even if you don’t know it. The two times I have moved to different states, I have always found a “mom” who would help in those instances when I needed it. When I moved to Atlanta, my car had issues, one sweet lady, called her mechanic, followed me there, and took me home after.

There are lots of types of moms. There are the ones who you are born to, the ones who “adopt” you and the ones that you “adopt”. Here are a few of my favorites looking at the spiritual side.

Mary is always at the top of the list. Her “yes” to the impossible situation continues to change the world. Have you ever imagined that situation? A young, unmarried girl who is pregnant. How did that conversation go with her parents? With Joseph? I’m sure there was a scandal, I’m sure it wasn’t easy, but Mary showed the grace to do the hard stuff because it’s the right thing to do.

If you are a mom and you think your prayers are not answered, have you heard of St. Monica? She prayed for her son Augustine for 17 years before his conversion. He was not following the right path, as his mother, what could she do but pray? Her patience and prayer paid off and she attended his baptism. Prayers do get answered, just not in our time.

Then there is Naomi. Her husband and sons pass away and that leaves her in a pickle. She has no one to care for her, so she decides to travel back to her family. Her daughter-in-law, Ruth, chooses to go with her. Ruth could have returned to her own family, but by then, she had a deep bond with Naomi.

Those are a few from the Bible. In my own life, I see lots of strong women who navigate challenging situations every day. There are lots of examples all around. Today, let’s pray for all moms. The ones we have and the ones we choose (or who choose us!) Happy Mother’s Day Moms!
