What kind of progress are you making?

It’s summertime, so my daily walk has to occur in the morning because it gets too hot later in the day. The beauty of the early morning is that there is still dew on the grass, the sun is not quite up, the air is cooler, the birds are singing, and there are lizards and inchworms creeping about.

I noticed that some of the inchworms are just emerging from the grass, or are on the sidewalk somewhere, or have made it to the other side. I began to think about progress. Each worm I saw was in a different stage of progress, they were not travelling in a straight line, but they were moving and on their way. (No, I did not step on them! I admired and stepped around them)

My thought today was how similar we are to the worms. As long as we are moving in the direction of the goal, we are making progress. It’s not a perfectly straight line. It’s not supposed to be. When was the last time that something went exactly in the right order without backtracking or skipping a step? The path to where we are going is hardly ever straight.

It doesn’t matter if I am talking about my path to heaven or my path to better health. The goal is in front of me and moves from time to time, often without me realizing or noticing until I have turned a corner. What it boils down to is that I am looking for progress, not perfection.

Wherever you are on your path with the challenges that you are facing, take heart. 1 Timothy 4:15 says “Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.” The formula to success is right there in the Bible. Be diligent, keep going, and people will see your progress- you will make progress.

I go back to my original question. Where are you making progress today? It doesn’t have to be a big step, it can be a small one. One choice you make today to eat healthier, to exercise, to work on a relationship, to find a new job. Whatever it is, celebrate the win for today and take one more small step tomorrow. You will arrive. 🙂
