This week’s readings are all about the rising and it’s a foreshadowing of what is to come at Easter- the resurrection. There are signs in many books of the Bible, and I wonder if we like the Isrealites or Jewish people of the time, are just not paying attention. Even in her grief, Martha reaches out to Jesus and tells him that she knows that God will grant any request he makes.
This is a bold statement, but Martha knows Jesus. We know they were friends and Jesus wept when he arrives and hears that Lazarus is dead. Jesus knows that Lazarus will come out of his tomb, but I think in the moment Jesus is just thinking about his friend and wondering if he’s too late. God can do anything, He can move mountains and raise people from the dead but there had to be a tiny thought in Jesus’ mind that it may not turn out as he thinks.
For Martha and Mary, their brother Lazarus is raised from the dead, their prayer is fulfilled. They have complete faith in God even if they cannot see the end result at the moment. When Jesus’ ressurection occurs, do Martha and Mary connect the dots? Do they realize the full extent of God’s love for them and really for all of us?
I’m choosing to believe that they do, that they see the connection between Lazarus, Jesus, God, and them and that they understand the impact. After all, they had a close, personal relationship with Jesus. They didn’t ponder who he could be- a prophet or the long awaited Messiah. They knew.
So my question to you today is: Do you know who Jesus is? Do you have the faith of Martha and Mary? Can you comprehend that divine connection between heaven and us? If your answer is yes, you may be farther along than me some days. If your answer is no, it’s not too late.
