Are we there yet?

In the past week, people all over the world got in cars, trains, buses or planes to go visit family and friends for the holidays. You may have small (or not so small) children who ask the question 30 minutes into a long trip….are we there yet? When are we getting there?

I am sometimes that person who thinks those very thoughts-and I’m the one driving! We are always in a hurry to get somewhere. It could be the end of a trip, the end of the line at the grocery, or get through the long TSA line. What do we think happens when we get where we are going? If we hurry, does anything actually happen faster?

Something I pondered on my long drive north this year was that it was actually very pleasant to drive, look at the snow falling, and be alone with my thoughts. I listened to various talk shows and radio stations, but what I came up with is- why am I in such hurry? I certainly don’t want to wish my life away.

The truth is, we will get to the end of the journey when it’s our time to get there and not one single moment sooner. I actually think that if we knew what is ahead of us, we would want to slow down, not go faster.

2024 did not turn out as I had thought. A year ago, I had a different perspective on what would happen. There were lots of twists, turns, and mountains to climb. Mountains I am still climbing. I don’t want to know ahead of time what will happen in 2025. What I do know is, whatever comes my way, God has prepared me for it, and I will come out on the other side better than I was before.

As this year ends and the next year begins, my new year wish for you is to not be in a hurry. Be in the moment and realize that it’s the best place to be right now.
