Bloom where you are planted.

Are you making the most of where you are right now?

Summer is coming to an end (sort of) and I want to say that I have been enjoying my wildflowers in my garden, but this year, they did not grow. At all. I planted sunflowers, and there should have been a wild mix of cosmos and zinnias for me to enjoy all summer. Spring looked promising…..and then….nothing.

There were definitely external forces at work, over which I had no control. Although, just this past week, two flowers decided to grow- quite randomly almost to say “Not grow? I’m going to show you!”. I feel like life is like this sometimes. The ground is very fertile and we grow easily and other times, it seems like there are so many weeds, how can it be possible to thrive?

There are two ways I look at this. Make the most of where you are right now or find a place where you can grow and bloom brighter.

When I was an in person teacher, I thought I was pretty good at doing the best with what I was given and being happy about it. Kids may not have liked learning French, but they rarely said that they didn’t like the class. Quite a win when dealing with teenagers. I loved going to conferences and learning new games and ways to teach, it was such a disappointment each time to get back and realize I would never use what I was learning; someone else would determine how I was going to do that. What I should have learned in that situation was: when there is no where to grow, it’s time to go.

Two months after leaving my in person teaching job, I found a position at an online company where I currently work. Growth is a part of the culture and even though it’s not always easy or smooth, continuous improvement means that I am continually learning, growing, and changing as well. Unlike previous jobs, there are helping hands everywhere, and my role has changed twice since I started- all in good ways. My boss carefully cultivates her garden and I am happy to be a part of it.

My wildflowers may be a lost cause this year, but who knows? Maybe next year I will surprised at how many pop up. Wherever you are in life right now, whatever is happening, it is possible to keep growing and going. Be like my recently blooming flowers. Show the world you are here and are blooming for all to see.
