I’ll leave a light on.

When I was a kid, there was that tag line in a commercial about leaving a light on for you. Genius, right? I immediately have the image of a porch light illuminating the front door so that coming in the house at night is not scary, because you know where you are. The light is bringing you home.

In fact, that line was one of the last things that my grandma said to me before she passed, she would leave a light on. She certainly did. The night that we were driving home after the wake, it was dark and yet there seemed to be a million stars (lights) in the sky. That’s when I knew she was looking down on us from above.

We leave lights on so others can find their way. Parents leave them on for kids at night, a lighthouse guides a ship, a candle or flashlight illuminates the dark when the power is out. We instinctively follow the light. Have you considered that we all have the light inside of us and that is what draws people in?

I don’t know about you, but when I am drawn to people, I can’t always explain why or what I like about them. They just have that special something. Lately, I’ve come to realize that I am drawn to the light that they have inside them-I cannot actually see it, but I know it’s there. Great spiritual leaders enchant me with their calm and peaceful demeanor. They figured it out- they are living in the light and it literally shines out of them.

We all have the light inside us. We are born with it. It may shine very brightly, or be dim. We have the power to turn it up by turning in to the divine light and goodness around us. Our light can be dimmed by events that occur in our lives or we can choose to put it out.

Wherever you are on that spectrum of light, you get to choose to turn it up or turn it down. Look at your circle around you. Are they beacons of light encouraging you to be your best self or are they the opposite?

I like the Sanskrit word namasate. It’s literal meaning can be translated as “I bow to you” as a greeting. A yoga teacher once explained it in my class as “The light in me recognizes the light in you”. I think about that when I come across someone who annoys me or I don’t like. Am I able to recognize the light in them?

The light will guide us to the right place, with the right people. What if today, we actively look for the light in others (and ourselves)? You may find yourself surrounded. I’ll leave my light on. Namaste.
