Is your cup half full or half empty?

I’m a “the cup is half full” kind of person. I can find the silver lining in almost every situation. It can be challenging to look for something good in the midst of your struggles. Been there. Am there. So how do I do that? Good question.

Yesterday, I decided to take a gratitude walk. It actually didn’t start out that way, it was just a normal walk after dinner. It was kind of gloomy, the sky covered in clouds. I didn’t say my usual prayers, I was just walking soaking in the fresh air. Suddenly as I kept putting one foot in front of the other, I started thanking God for all of my blessings. Each step, a thank you, each step, a blessing.

By the end of my walk, I had spent more than 30 minutes praying and being grateful, really feeling it. As I walked back up the hill, the sun was peaking out from behind the clouds. I see it God….the sun is coming.

Life has gone a little sideways this week, it’s been really busy at work and at home. (Can you relate??) This is the moment that I need a gratitude walk. Not to solve any problems, just to be in the positive place and realize that wherever I am, whatever is going on, I can always move (if only in thought) to a better place.

When I am in a place of gratitude, my cup is not just half full, it’s overflowing with goodness. If I really think about it, my cup is always overflowing, that’s what God is telling me in Psalm 23. I am anointed (chosen- God knows my name) AND I have an abundance of goodness.

So how do you get from half empty to half full (or overflowing)?

  1. Put one foot in front of the other
  2. Think about all your blessings- what is going right?
  3. Say thank you.

Three steps, sounds simple but can be challenging for sure. How do you stay (or get) into a grateful place when you don’t feel that way? A walk worked for me, what works for you?
