More than sixteen candles on my cake

It’s my favorite month of the year- August! Why? It’s my birthday month and there are many reasons to celebrate. There are a few more candles on my cake than sixteen this year, (it’s a nice round number) Here is my moment to reflect.

This year, I moved positions in my company twice. From part time teacher, to full time employee, with a promotion that came two months ago. I work with people that truly care about each other with a focus on continuous improvement. “How can we improve the process?” and “What can we learn?” are frequent questions. I am not an island and I am challenged to think beyond myself.

My new favorite snack is a recipe I have perfected of a healthy peanut butter cup. I can’t feel bad about eating them, there are only good, yummy ingredients that I can pronounce. If you are lucky, I will share.

Falling down (literally) changed my outlook on my springtime activities. I had to laugh because I looked like an 8 yr old with a badly skinned knee, gosh that hurt, but I needed to slow down. That pain brought me some much needed rest.

We are never, ever, ever getting back together- that should have been my theme song last August. It was not. I gave someone another chance. Turns out, that was a bad decision, and no, I didn’t listen to the people telling me different. If I had listened, I wouldn’t have learned the lesson, and might have wondered. Some lessons you have to learn on your own. Can you relate?

Looking back on the past 12 months, I can see the purpose in some of my detours, some are still a mystery. Maybe I will find out, maybe not, and I’m ok with that. By the way, if you are waiting on the world to change; it will when you do. It’s all in how you look at it. I can look at the past year and see where I fell down, got hurt, made a mistake; but what about the blessings that came from all of that?

Blessings come in all shapes and sizes and sometimes as complete surprises! The surprises are my favorite, I mean this blog is an interesting turn of events. The month is not over yet, I am sure there are more lessons to learn and fun to be had.

My birthday wish for you is that you do something new in the next year. Next year, you can look back and see the growth. I challenge you before your next birthday to take a little time to reflect on how far you have come. Then look towards the new year and ask for the wisdom of what to do next plus the courage to actually do it.
