Today is a gift. Are you present?

Today is only here for today. What does it mean to be present?

Today has been on my mind lately. I’m pretty happy in my current “today” but the other day, I was challenged with “how can you bless someone today?”. It wasn’t in the future or to remember a time I blessed someone in the past, it was now, right away, no procrastination.

The first thought that came to mind was “I don’t have time.” Not true. We all have time, we are just spending it on something else. A tv binge watch session might give my body some rest, but it doesn’t feed my soul. If I work too late in the day, I miss my daily walking time since the sun goes down earlier. That’s my outside, quiet, no screen time, also not beneficial to my mood or soul.

My moment came mid-morning with a text from a friend. I had an opportunity to bless someone that day, so I did. It didn’t turn out as I planned, but exactly as it should have. I was present for my friend that day and that’s the best gift we can give them.

What’s the point you ask? We live in an unpredictable world. Life rarely goes as we plan, tragedies occur. No matter what is happening, there is an opportunity present each day. Get up, be present, and change the world. It’s not about tomorrow, what can I do today to bless someone else? That is enough.

There was a time in my life when my first thought of the day was “When do I get to come back to bed today?”. I didn’t wake up with a smile, or a grateful heart, wondering what wonderful things are happening today. Today, there was the most beautiful sunrise, it was amazing. Right now, I may not be where I am going yet, but I am sure not where I was. Today, I choose to be grateful to be in this moment in my life. I choose to be kind to myself, and look for ways to be kind to others.

What gift are you giving the world each day? Is it time with your kids, spouse, or significant other? Is practicing kindness towards yourself or someone else? Could it be taking a walk or spending time in prayer? Recognize today for what it is, a gift. Realize that you have the power to choose how you spend today and who you can bless.

What kind of day are you choosing? How are you spending it? Who can you bless today?
