So, it’s Lent. Catholics (and some other Christian denominations) give things up. We are also called to ‘give alms’. What does that mean? My interpretation of the word ‘alms’ has always meant money. According to the dictionary, it refers to giving something (like money or food) freely to relieve the poor. Well. That changes my perspective a bit on what that means. So really, I can interpret that as “sharing what I have with someone less fortunate than me”.
There are lot’s of ways to give of what we have so here are a few ideas. Feel free to use my list, add on to it, or make your own.
- Give up getting coffee out and give the money you would have spent to church or a charity you support.
- Clean out your closet and donate the clothes you no longer wear.
- Go through your cupboards for home goods you are not using, donate them.
- See what the local food bank needs for supplies and take over a few bags of groceries.
- Give a little extra money each week at church when the collection plate goes by.
Maybe you do all of the above mentioned things on a regular basis, maybe not. What if I want to keep it ‘closer to home’ and in my own circle of people? They may not be the Bible’s definition of poor, but everyone needs help at some point. Here are a few thoughts.
- Make a meal for a friend or neighbor just because you know they are busy and may not always have time to cook.
- If you have kids of similar age to others in your circle, can you do a clothing swap with other moms? Toys as well?
- If you stop for that coffee or breakfast sandwich, could you pay for the person behind you? (or part of it if they have a big order?)
It’s not difficult for me to think of ways to give to other people. The sticking point is that I don’t remember to actually do it. I am often too wrapped up in what is happening in my world to think that far out. This is why Lent is a great time of year. It’s a time for me to refocus on the most important relationship I have- the one with my Lord and Savoir.
Perhaps my list has inspired or reminded you that there are many ways to give alms to others this Lent. I pray that you find the way that feels right to you and give with a smile!
