Do you know how to pray? Your answer is probably yes. You may already have a good habit in place. This topic came up recently in a Bible study, we were discussing prayer habits. Many of the people said that they needed to create new habits, either they had gotten to familiar or they are looking to start a new one.
I sat there thinking that my daily prayer routine is good, I pray when I wake up, I say a rosary each day, go to adoration each month. I thought, I don’t need to change, I’m all good. Is that true? Am I ‘all good’. It stayed on my mind- how the people in my group were going to try new things, so what should I try?
I imagine I am similar to many. I contemplate many things before I decide on one. Get up an hour early to pray? Nope. Listen to podcasts every day? Nope. Just start reading the Bible? Nope.
I like short meditations- a verse, a quote, something that I think about during the day. I landed on the Bible verse of the day. I’m sure there are lots of websites that do the same thing, but in my searching, I came across an app. (I mean- there is an app for everything now!)
My new addition to the routine is spending a few moments in my car before I go into work. I read the verse and think about how it applies to me in the moment. I don’t always see it, but I wonder how as I continue to look up the verse each day, how that will impact my life.
Do you feel like you need a change in your prayer life? My suggestion is to start small, like with a verse a day, or printing out verses you love to put where you can see them. If you want something more challenging to you, yes, get up early, read the Bible, say the Rosary.
If you want to start a new habit and are stumped. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you- you can’t go wrong! Happy praying!
