Would you walk 500 (or more) miles?

Lots of studies show that walking every day has many physical and mental benefits. Would you sign up through to walk hundreds or thousands of miles? If you did, what would inspire you to do that?

Every year, there are thousands of people the embark on such a journey here in the US on the the Appalachian trail or through Europe on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). I would wager that some on the Appalachian trail are on a spiritual journey or maybe it’s for the physical endurance, a test to push the limits. In contrast all of the walkers (pilgrims) on the way of St. James are walking with a purpose.

El Camino de Santiago can be anywhere from 500-800 kilometers and it really just depends on where you begin. There are starting points from various points in France, as far north as England, or begin in Spain. It’s all very well documented and ends in the same spot in Santiago, Spain. The pilgrims are greeted each day with fanfare and finish their long journey at the Basilica of St. James.

So what compels people to walk hundreds of miles? Choosing to spend time walking alone (or not – there are always others on the path with you) is not for everyone. It’s just you, your thoughts, God, and the beautiful scenery. What I have learned from talking with people on the path is that some are working something out, a life change, a diagnosis, grief, gratitude, you name it and there is a reason. Others are looking for the spiritual/God connection to the walk.

I have never been on a 500 mile walk, but I have been on a seven day retreat and spent summers teaching in the woods. After awhile, a few days, your mind starts to quiet and what you really need to work out or connect to begins to get worked out. Our connection to nature is powerful. There are no technological distractions. You are in perpetual motion in the elements, being challenged in ways you can’t even imagine if you are not there.

A long walk/hike/pilgrimage is a journey into yourself with God as your constant companion. I know people currently on that journey in Spain (maybe France by now) and in Italy. My prayer for them and all that walk the same paths is that they find the peace that it brings and the answers they are seeking.

If you are thinking that such a journey is out of your reach because you can’t take weeks off from work, have family obligations, or reasons you cannot walk that far, I completely understand. Instead of leaving the country, you can explore and enjoy the benefits of the spiritual journey in nature closer to home. Carve out some time this week, alone or with your family to take a longer walk or hike- no distractions allowed. Just go, enjoy, and be. Your body and soul will thank you.
